Helicopt-O-Bot

I haven't had time to do any sketches lately, mostly because I've been busy trying to fulfill all the print orders. Is that irony? I'm not sure. Anyway, here's one I did tonight - I ended up with two versions, and I can't decide which one I like better, so I'm posting both. I also made a wallpaper version.

Version 1 - click to enlarge:

Version 2 - click to enlarge:

Here is the original sketch, which has Helicopt-O-Bot looking a bit too robotic. I changed him to look more like something an inventive child could put together out of items from around the house and believe it really works.

I kind of like the second version more as it's more true to the original sketch.

I love how its so colorful and cartoony, but really what its saying is that Timmy is going to keep aacending until he either runs out of air and suffocates or the propeller runs out of gas and he falls to his death. Either way Timmy isnt going to make it out alive. Subversively morbid!

i like the original sketch's perspective. i am somehow more worried for timmy than your two other colored prints.

Actually, you're right about the perspective - it got all screwed up as I kept changing ideas. I switched to a downward perspective because I was going to do a really cool, vertigo-inducing background where you could really feel a sense of height - looking down at Timmy's house all tiny below him, with the neighborhood stretching out beyond that to a curved horizons with a distant mountain range - as suggested by this sketch. But I quickly realized that was going to take FOREVER, and I just didn't have that kind of time to devote to it. So I did something quick based on the original sketch. The beauty of digital, of course, is that I could always go back and do a new background, if I ever felt so inclined.

And that is the incredibly boring story of why you're looking up at the trees, but down at Timmy.

I prefer version one, but that may just be because it's green and my eye is automatically drawn to anything green. But i like the simplicity of it as well.

I prefer the khaki/tree combo in number 2. Any chance of that becoming a wallpaper too?

I can see a Calvin and Hobbes influence here. Especially how Timmy actually put the name on the robot

I like the original sketch as well.
I know you are more tech inclined, but I think the original sketch would look great inked out.
Sort of Bone meets Calvin & Hobbs.

Do you ever consider doing a full on comic book?
I don't think you would have any problem getting published.

i like the original best. and the way the bot tilts its head to the ground, it's so life-like. funny. cheers for that.

Hi! I like them all. But I like the original the best! I like that it seems more childlike, especially the"Helicopt-o-bot" sign that Timmy drew! This sketch makes me smile a lot.

i like the color ones better than the sketch because of what rob said: in the sketch the robot looks like a real robot but in the color versions it looks like something a kid would build. its made out of a garbage can and a laundry basket and clocks and a shopping cart and held together with tape and belts and somehow it still works. there is alot more detail in the big wallpaper version. very clever! :)

I can't decide which one I like better, although I like the the shape of the robot's head better in the sketch. You should consider selling your prints on etsy.com

Personally I prefer the top version. I don't think you really need the trees in the background with them he's really not that far from the ground. Without them he seems higher and there for more worried about the fact that the robot only goes up.

The first one grabbed my attention the most.

This is my favorite to date!

I especially liked your comments about changing it to look more like something an inventive child would make. It gave the picture much more depth.

Thanks again for sharing your work with us!
