Happy Halloween, From The Zombified Decapitated Head of Dick Cheney.

Today's sketch is not a sketch at all, but rather a little Halloween decoration I put together. I saw a surprisingly well-modeled Dick Cheney rubber mask whilst shopping for Halloween decorations at my local Party City (which, incidentally, is much more of a stressful hellhole than any kind of party on the weekend before Halloween). I immediately decided that my Halloween would not be complete without some sort of decapitated Dick Cheney head. I found a cool-looking plastic skull at Target, and picked up a plastic brain, and with the help of red paint, scissors, super glue, plastic bags, fire, and Play-Doh, The Zombified Decapitated Head of Dick Cheney Halloween Candy Platter was born!

(As someone in the comments pointed out, this creation could also be described, on a number of different levels, as a Dickhead.) Click to enlarge:

I think maybe for the trick-or-treating kids who knock on my door, every fun-sized Snickers bar they pluck from Dick Cheney's severed head is going to include a terrifying horror story called The Most Evil Man Who Ever Lived. Here's another view:

And it seemed more than fitting to make a card out of it, so here you go (click for full-sized version):

I love Halloween.

When Pigs Fly...

Okay, so yeah, I neglected poor SketchBlog. I need to just post really crappy drawings on days when I'm too busy... But this morning I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone, so for SketchBlog I whipped up an image to use for an editorial over at Demonbaby. It's a ghost pig flying to piggy heaven!

YesterdayCube

The look of this was inspired by an old metal sign I have - which is also where I got the overlay texture. It's an "Emergency Resuscitation" sign from the '70's - I found it in a ratty old spring factory somewhere in London.

The image itself came from how much I like the word "YesterdayCube," which popped into my head randomly yesterday.

Gravity

True story.

Twenty years later, I'll still occasionally find myself sizing up the gravity-reversal safety of my surroundings.

I really need to get a better grasp on the concept of a "sketch." This was way more complicated than it probably looks. Yeah, my Saturday nights go OFF.

Trick Or Treat

In the spirit of the season, and continuing my current interest in simple shapes and colors, I whipped up this invite for a friend's Halloween party (click to enlarge):

Girl in Peril

I started this blog to motivate myself to draw more. It's been a favorite hobby of mine since as long as I can remember, but in recent years I've let it go, often going years at a time without drawing anything. One of my problems is that once I start something, I have a hard time keeping it simple. I make it complex and detailed and laborious, and it never gets finished. So today I decided to start a new little disciplinary exercise: I'm going to draw at least one picture every day. Even if sometimes it only takes five minutes, or it's just a stick person, something has to go up every day. It'll force me to learn to create things more simply and quickly, and putting them up on a blog like this makes it more real, and encourages me to stick with it. Plus people can harass me via the comments if I slip up.

To get things started, I decided to finish a little drawing that had been sitting around since the last time I told myself I was going to draw more. At the time I had a sudden urge to make something, but didn't have any ideas. I asked the always-helpful Tamar, who said, "draw a picture of me." I told her no, I did not want to draw a picture of her. She then said, "draw a picture of me getting eaten by a monster." Okay, I told her, I could handle that. But as usual, I never finished it - so when today when I was reminded of the cool '70's-flavored design work of Scott Hansen, his simple shapes and color palettes made me think of that drawing, and inspired me to dig it up and finish it. So here it is, dedicated to Tam for the original inspiration - click to enlarge, obviously:

Limited Edition Prints by Rob Sheridan

By popular demand, I'm doing a series of limited edition prints of selected images that have been featured on Sketchblog. Each image is limited to 100 prints (in some cases only 50), which means that after 100 have been sold, I will never make prints of that image again. The prints are signed, numbered, and made on really nice museum-quality archival fine art paper with archival inks. All of the images here were created as large prints, so they look really fantastic at full size.

Payments can be made via PayPal, which also accepts credit cards. Please include your shipping address and email in the order form. Allow about two to three weeks for shipping.

If you have any questions, email me at prints@rob-sheridan.com.
NOTE: Sizes listed are paper sizes - actual image area will be slightly smaller, leaving a white border for signing (and framing).

NEW! By popular demand, I am taking special orders for prints of other illustrations from Sketchblog that aren't available on this page. If you're interested, email me which image you are interested in.

About SketchBlog

My name is Rob. I'm 29 years old, I live in Los Angeles, and I'm a professional art director. While I work mostly with graphic design and video, illustration has always been my favorite means of expression. I grew up an only child of a single mother, so my sketchbook and my imagination were often my best childhood friends. My brain was raised on a hearty diet of comic books, toy robots, saturday morning cartoons, Star Wars, and Nintendo. And not a whole lot has changed since then, really, except that my sketchbook has gone digital.

I originally made this SketchBlog as an exercise in creative discipline - an attempt to get myself to draw more and play around with images and ideas that wouldn't fit in my professional work. A playground for the side of my brain that never really grew up, I suppose. It's proved to be a tremendous motivational tool, and I'm really pleased with some of the art that's come out of it so far.

If you want to see how I spend the rest of my time, you can visit my professional portfolio. If you want to follow my meaningless banter all day long, you can follow me on Twitter. You can also email me at rob (at) rob-sheridan (dot) com. I love getting emails, but I am notoriously terrible at responding to them.

Some of the illustrations from here, and a lot of photos I've taken, can be found on my Flickr page. I also have a page on Facebook, if that's your thing.

You can check out images I've bookmarked on my Ffffound page.

If you still want to know more, here is a very incomplete list of things which have influenced me, and other visual artists I admire:
