Cereal Mascot Reunion

For some reason this image has been swimming around in my head for a few years now, and finally - after chipping away at it bit by bit over the last couple months - I've brought it to life as a large, absurdly detailed print. It's kind of about the strange, uncomfortable feeling of reuniting with old friends only to find that the magic just isn't there anymore - and in turn, about the melancholy "nothing will ever be as good as it used to be" type of nostalgia, of which I am increasingly fond. And of course, a tribute to the late, great, wood-paneled, shag-carpeted 1970's rec room.

Download the hi-res wallpaper: Standard (4x3) or Widescreen (16x9)

Order the 22" x 17" limited run fine art print

Details: Trix Rabbit, Frankenberry, Count Chocula, Cap'n Crunch, Tony The Tiger

UPDATE:I've posted a detailed step-by-step of how this was put together, for those interested.

In other news, I polished up a couple images to get them print-ready for the Possum Saloon show last week, so now Headache and Miscarriage are available as prints. I'm also now offering smaller 11" x 17" sizes on some of the prints, for those who don't want the full size.

what an awesome image-gives me the feeling of a bunch of old men waiting for a party to bust out. but. i think they all have come to realize that its never gonna happen.
kinda reminds me of all the has beens still clinging to the 80's rock scene. Nostalgia gone wrong!

This is so great. Attention to detail is amazing as usual, especially with the pack of cards and half-rolled cigarettes. Good job (:

I couldn't help myself...this will go nicely in the videogame room next to the #1/100 Mario Print. I'm still on the search for a frame that will do it justice!

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Kick-ass job Rob. As usual of course. He hee they all have man boobs.....except I can't tell with Capn' Crunch. He's reading Penthouse..ha ha ha! He looks like he's enjoying himself at least. The kids should come down right now begging for all of their autographs. I like Boo Berry the most. Don't know why. He just stands out from the others. Probably because he is purple and at the angle it's in, appears farther away to me. The room....classic. We had a dart board like that. The reflection on the coffee table is very impressive (all of it is but especially that part and the shadows underneath teh table). Actually my old bedroom looked like this room. I hated it. It was small and the wood walls made me feel like I was in a coffin. The rug was 70's too. A lot like what's in the painting. KISS and what I'm guessing is Bowie at the bottom? Also sweeeeeet. Actually I'm not a fan of KISS but many (including Trent, hee hee) were. Perhaps if I was older I would feel the same why (I'm only 19 so yeah........). Are they drinking expired beer? Actually I don't know if beer expires but the cans look old so yeah...

I thought quite a bit about which characters to include. I didn't want to crowd the room with tons of of them, so I settled on five (I tried squeezing in Lucky Leprechaun in an early sketch, but the couch was just getting too crowded), narrowed down by recognition factor and how interesting they would be to visually interpret. It would be fun to do a sequel and bring in some of the ones I left out here, like Lucky Leprechaun and Boo Berry and Toucan Sam.

Your blog photo reminds me of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective when Carey had the asparagus in his mouth. I just felt like saying that because that's what I think everytime I see it. Happy day.

Do you like my acrylic painting in the blog photo? I don't expect you to answer Rob, but I'm a bit of a compliment whore so yeah... Yes...I'm obsessive. And yes, that isn't from a photo I took unfortunately as I have yet to attend a NIN concert, but I will SOON if all goes well. The one at the top post of mine is a Sharpie marker drawing I did in about 15 minutes.

Ah, I sure know that kind of nostalgia... The gloom kind. Which you've indeed captured, I love the general feeling of doooom in this piece..haha. I can't say I can relate to any of the characters though, my not being american gets very obvious, what with missing out (although I survived, apparently) on various popcultural phenomenons and in this case manifesting itself through a suddenly very evident cereal isolation. Hah.
Anyways, I'd love a step-by-step, as I think most of the time that itself can be as interesting as the final result.

Same here. :D I only knew about the tiger. I remember one commercial with him, from maybe 1991. *nostalgiatrip*
but...I recognise the feeling, and the details are amazin!!! :B

This is an awesome piece! There are two mascots that I'm unaware of.
I also like the idea "about the strange, uncomfortable feeling of reuniting with old friends only to find that the magic just isn't there anymore" I recently got reunited with a lot of my old friends and after talking with them, I concluded that "the magic just isn't there anymore"
