Broken Robot Girl #1
I'm working on a series of photos of broken robot girls, in collaboration with Tamar Levine. We're hoping to do four or five photos altogether. This is the first one - Tamar took the photo and I did the special effects in Photoshop. We're pretty happy with the way it turned out:

Here's a close-up so you can see some of the details:

For some of the other images in the series, we want the robots to be in much further states of disrepair - missing limbs and things like that. We're looking for someone with some skills in prop-making or fashioning mechanical parts who could help us create some cool-looking bits and pieces of robot joints and insides and other mechanical parts that would be coming out of broken-off limbs and cracked-open joints. If you or someone you know has any crazy sculpting/mechanical skills and might want to help out, drop me a line: rob (at) rob-sheridan (dot) com.

That is some amazing work. I can't wait to see what the rest of the series will bring.
Not too shabby!
Great piece. Thanks for posting. I look forward to the rest of the series.
Looks so synthetic yet human at the same time. Brilliant, Mr. Sheridan. Brilliant. :D
:p
Looks perfect. Of course... Are you gonna post anything more specific about the making of the pic?
(Doing some chasing of my prop-making friend, or maybe her prop-making friends... :) )
very kool and seamless. her expression is nice too~
This may be my favorite of your pieces - top five at the very least.
wow! good work!
awesome idea!
oh and i'm sure you'll be able to find someone to help with the prop-making but you should find someone that is an amputee to model. Prosthetics kinda look robotic and some of them, like my housemates, have fake skin on them.
just a suggestion. i can't wait to see the rest of the series.
Ah, so we finally see what you've been working on!
It looks amazing, and I really like the idea behind it.
this is very cool, would love to know how you did this on photoshop. looking forward to the series!
here it is at last! awesome work indeed :)
Really great job, Tamar and Rob! :)
The basic process was:
1. Photograph the model in position, wearing a bald cap. Our makeup artist gave the girl fake eyelashes, and put a balm on her body to give it an unnatural shine. The head sitting on the table in the foreground was a mannequin head.
2. Photograph the scene with no model in it from the exact same spot, so I have a clean background to work with, allowing me to easily move and remove parts of the girl.
3. Photograph various tubes and wires and mechanical parts in roughly the position they would be in the final image, so I have materials to use that are already in the proper lighting.
4. Photograph the model's face in roughly the same place as where the mannequin head was, so the girl's face could easily be inserted onto the mannequin head.
5. Bring all those elements together as layers in Photoshop, and begin piecing them together, carefully hand-painting elements that never existed, like the seams on her face and body, and the smooth edges of her detached shoulder, and smoothing out the transition between her skin and the bald cap.
6. ???
7. Profit!
this is quite interesting.
Looking forward to seeing the series.
woowww. i want to be a robot girl too .) so cool
Wait are you -the- Rob Sheridan! Art director for Nine Inch Nails?; responsible of shaping our visual perception of the band for the past decade?
That's your guy!
Very cool! I like it a lot, it's very interesting to just stare at and see all the details. Very great!
wow nice work with photoshop! and the photo is great
did you paint in the details with paintbrush, or is it lots of other photographic references composited together.
i dont get it
Very cool idea!
how long does that process take?
nice, almost like a matte painting...the help needed you mentioned, do you need "real" mechanics or cgi?
This is fantastic! Can't wait to see the rest of the series. I did a similar series (3) of girls (and one guy) deteriorating, or crumbling. The process was very similar to yours.
I never actually did anything with them once completed. They're still all on my laptop...lol.
I can't decide what I liked more...the photo or your post describing how it was made.
It's one of your finest pieces, in my opinion.
I'm looking forward to the the next installment!
beautiful work I look forword to more, and will likely buy a print once theyre available
Nice Rob, and thanks for posting the basic steps. The seams came out great and the skin looks very plasticized. Its creepy, and I like it.
Great concept! I think we have all been fascinated with robotic women at one point in our lives, some not so healthy, but this to me shows a side we don't normally think about or see with robots; Insecurity!
I love all of your creatures and your editing on this photo is so seemless.
keep up the good work! :)
Pretty cool. but where did you get the face from?
massive Terminator potential
It seems like every time I see this photo there's a new little detail that pops to me.
I was just checking out some of your work. Really amazing stuff. :)
Peace,
JB
this project is going to look sick when its done. i've always toyed around with the idea of making a model a machine. you beat me to it. Nice work, and keep it up.
haha.. i like this one..
how could you make this stuff??
That's really remarkably beautiful. Though, I am sure you knew that.
This is so beautiful. I can't keep my eyes off of it.This must have taken you forever and a day to work on using photoshop...wow. Amazing!
We really love this image. We have something similar in file but this one is just great!
Beautiful work! And what an elegant concept. I wish I would think of things like this.
Please show us the rest of the series as you make them.
